Favourite Documentaries (Discussion)

What are some of your favourite documentaries?

I recently watched a documentary called The Bridge in which footage of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was filmed for a year, and filmed 24 suicides of being jumping off the bridge. Apparently 1 person does this every 15 days. It wasn’t the best documentary, but it was a very intriguing concept for a film.

I also liked Supersize Me. There have been many imitations of this movie since it came out, but I found this one the most honest and in-depth. It had really clever use of American culture and the effects that eating poorly had on the man (except for that case of the guy who ate 3 Big Macs a day!).

I really enjoyed The Bridge, and thought it was a daring concept. The director was present at the screening I saw and said they actually prevented several suicides during their observation.

Supersize Me was fun, but a bit of a stunt. I recommend a new documentary called Food Inc. directed by Robert Kenner which played at TIFF last year. It’s a more serious treatment of some of the issues raised by Spurlock’s film.

I didn’t enjoy Supersize Me all too much… I found it disturbing. My favourite documentary so far was the Corporation, I think it’s a classic for business purposes. Plus I hate corporations.

I find when I’m watching a documentary I usually take a side beforehand, and either spend my time criticizing or supporting every point the movie makes depending on my personal views. I can’t honestly keep an open mind. What do you think?
