Foreign Films (Discussion)

Do you watch them? I never do. I feel like I’m missing out, but the truth is that I watch movies to relax. Trying to read subtitles at the speed of light is not relaxing. What are your favorite films of all time? Why?

Since I’ve already confessed to not knowing any foreign films, the U.S. fils that are my favorite include Cyrano de Bergerac and anything directed by Frank Capra or Alfred Hitchcock… I love old black and white movies. Another favorite is the Musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. My taste in film mirrors my taste in music, I like all genres as long as the writing is good.

That really depends on what kind of mood I am in. I have a great variety of taste in film. Though if I have to pick my favorite films, they have to be the old school noirs; The Big Sleep, Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, To Have To Have Not… Bogart is the man!

Other films I greatly enjoy range in genres: The Good, The Bad, the Ugly… Gladiator… 28 Days Later… Evil Dead Triology… Princess Bride… Naked Lunch… Vertigo… 2001: A Space Odyssey… Clockwork Orange… The Shinning… just to name a few. Oh and most recently, There Will Be Blood was amazing.

I highly recommend any movies I just listed, but for certain ones, such as Evil Dead or Naked Lunch, you have to be in a certain mind frame.

As for Foreign films, I don’t mind reading subtitles, but generally I stick to Asian and French movies. If you want a really good film with a heck of a twist at the end, watch Old Boy.

Also, if you’ve followed much with the Bosnian/Serbian war in the past the movie No Mans Land is absolutely amazing.

There are some great classic foreign films that have paved the way for many new wave directors. One of my favourites is The Bicycle Thief/Ladri di Biciclette (De Sica, 1948, made in Italy) it’s a beautifully shot film. Belle de Jour (Bunuel, 1967, collaborated on in France and Italy) is also a great classic worth checking out!

Another great foreign film which is actually a collaborative effort between Canada and India is called Water by Deepa Mehta. It is supposed to be very beautifully shot and include an intrinsically woven story infusing drama and romance. It was featured at the Toronto Film Festival a few years back and was very raved about. The narrative is written in Hindi.

of course, having to read subtitles may not let you relax during the movie. but the question is , does enjoying the movie always have to take place while watching it? some let impressions in your mind which might be unnoticed while watching it!

Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai is my most favorite foreign movie. I have seen several times, the essence of the movie misinterpreted. I can roughly say it is a divine selflessness and utter passion for the fellow beings. please do watch it.

I think it depends on the type of film-goer you are and the type of mood you are in. Foreign movies are enjoyable for me because I find them refreshing and they offer a different perspective, not only because it might be in a different language but also the way the dynamics of the scenes and plot work. There are also times when you just want to be able to enjoy a movie without having to read every single line and analyze what is going on while you are watching the film. There are a lot of popular foreign films these days – Amelie is one of my favourites, as well as La Vita e Bella and La Dolce Vita…French new wave cinema by Truffaut is quite interesting too.

@acrosstheuniverse- ever since I moved to Toronto, I’ve been renting videos at Queen Video. It has absolutely everything there – foreign films, obscure films, the Criterion collection, old movies, new movies, documentaries, the list goes on. Best place to rent movies in Toronto, hands down!
